Sri Lanka, an island nation with a population of 22 million, is a close neighbor of India to the south. It’s geopolitically significant and strategically important. At present, it’s facing the worst financial crisis since its independence in 1948.
As one of the key countries in China’s “One Belt, One Road” project, whether it will be able to pay back its large debts to China is also under scrutiny. Is Sri Lanka’s financial crisis related to China?
The negative consequences of the Belt and Road for the world are becoming more apparent, with Sri Lanka being the latest example.
As the international situation changes and the Chinese economy experiences a rapid decline, it should become increasingly difficult for the CCP to expand internationally through the Belt and Road.
