New York taxi medallions once sold for a million dollars, but the previously solid investment crashed after the introduction of Uber and Lyft. Drivers who had borrowed hundreds of thousands of dollars were drowning in debt.

In 2018, nine taxi drivers died by suicide, including Kenny Chow. His brother, Richard, went on a hunger strike for 15 days, demanding debt relief. Drivers said that if the city didn’t act, even more would take their own lives.
