Today, the children’s publishing industry is a global enterprise. Picture books are as ubiquitous an American export as iPhones and soybeans. At the same time, American publishers have become increasingly open to working with authors and illustrators from abroad and introducing books that originated elsewhere. With international artists well represented on publishers’ lists, the time has surely come for the Caldecott Medal to drop the ban on illustrators who aren’t citizens or residents of the United States. The critic Leonard S. Marcus considers the issue.
